I am very new to Bainbridge Island, and am puzzled by SIGNS SIGNS SIGNS. On my street right outside my home, three new signs randomly appeared advertising hauling/moving. And today, these signs have been taken out of the ground and now just laying on the side of the road? Frustrated walker? Could someone direct me how to learn about COBI sign ordinances? And, is there enforcement, or "this is just the way it is?"
hello rfdlyons: lots of info in our code about signage and regulations is here: https://www.codepublishing.com/WA/BainbridgeIsland/html/BainbridgeIsland15/BainbridgeIsland1508.html. There is nothing I could see that describes the ownership or validity of a sign's origin, this is why I am asking the question, hoping for an answer for the city. But there is quite a bit of info in the code governing location, enforcement, etc.
WOW! That certainly isn't simple for me to understand.....so someone uprooted a number of signs placed on my street and they are laying on the ground.....something about College Hunks/Junk haulers. Any suggestions on a "point of contact" for my questions?
For the most part signs are allowed in the right of way as long as they don't interfere with public safety. If they are on private property then the owner must approve the placement. If the signs become junk I will report it to our public works crew.
Thank you- is there no requirement that the sign must identify its affiliation or organization it represents? If that is not required, how do you figure out the ownership and therefore how to assign responsibility if there is an issue with it? Thanks.
Thank you both so much. Personally, I believe signage is important. However, being so new to BI, I have not become desensitized to the visual and physical cacophony. A few weeks ago, several signs advertising hauling/moving were placed on Shannon Dr SE My guess is frustrated walkers/parkers pulled most up, but here is an example of one that remains - just dsicarded on the ground. Will someone please return to owner?
It is a little confusion sometimes. Signs in the right of are protected speech under the constitution. Obviously they can not endanger the public safety. If the sign is legally posted then it is a crime for a walker/other to just remove it because they disagree with the message. The City is in the process of rewriting our code to meet new court rulings. Sometime soon there should be public comment asked for. Please voice your opinion.
Thanks for the information revisions in sign ordinance. Which department is handing that, and how will public commentary be requested? In the meantime, the sign in the photo is still laying by side of street on Shannon Dr SE.
New sign code, as I understand the city council will have it on their agenda and take public commit, probable late Oct or Nov. I have asked our P/W to pick up the garbage signs. Please understand that this is a low priority but will be on the list for them.
Thanks for your efforts. Could you please ask P/W to grab the signs off the Madison Traffic circle for garage sales that are posted right above yet another sign that says "do not post signs" while they are at it? Today, I walked up to Winslow Green; one sign blocking railing at bottom of stairs; two signs on stairs blocking railing - and yes, I need those railings!
